Still Life

Brink

I began taking photos of a lively green apple on an interest in product photography and being in lock-down due to Covid-19. I used a window for natural lighting and took over 400 photos of this apple. I kept taking photos until I ran out of ideas or angles to use. The shots in the beginning were standard close ups and portraits of the apple. After a while, my mind began to think of other interesting angles I could capture of the apple. I created the photo below from a birds eye view by standing on a chair. I took the photo with low exposure so it seems as if the apple is hanging over the ledge of the window about to fall into a dark abyss.

This photo can be viewed on the 2020 Annual Juried Art Show at Albright College. Due to the coronavirus this usually in-person exhibit is now viewed online indefinitely.

Still Life Techniques

I completed this still life series in my photography II class at Albright College. For the still life series we covered basic elements of photography and using DIY lighting. I had in-class shots and at-home shots. Due to multiple snow days and trying to stay on schedule, I only had one of my shots taken in-class and the others were taken in my dorm. This was my first time shooting still life photography and doing DYI lighting. The composition that I used for my in-class shot is complimentary contrast. Compositions that I took in my at-home still life photographs include line, texture, shape, repetition, and emphasis.
